About AHEAD Energy Corporation

AHEAD, founded in 1988 and housed at the University of Rochester in Rochester, New York, is a nonprofit corporation that works with energy-poor communities to develop local energy resources, making them available to improve lives and livelihoods in ways that safeguard the natural environment.

International Voluntary Service Activities

In an effort to bring modern energy services to the 18,000,000 inhabitants of the sub-Saharan nation of Mozambique, AHEAD Energy Corporation (AHEAD) is placing seasoned energy professionals in emerging energy institutions and agencies in Mozambique.

Energy resources in developing nations are widely undeveloped primarily because of a lack of native (as opposed to ex-patriot) trained professionals. AHEAD is beginning its volunteer program in Mozambique because we have a 15-year history of working with energy agencies there. The program will be regularly evaluated to improve its effectiveness in order to be replicated in other developing nations.

Volunteers donate their time, embed their knowledge in local agencies/institutions, and establish relationships that provide benefits long after assignments are completed. Volunteers make a significant impact on the efforts of developing nations to utilize their extensive natural energy resources, lift local standards of living, and address both humanitarian and environmental concerns.

Volunteer Profile Summary

AHEAD works with a number of agencies including the Ministry of Energy, the Ministry of Natural Resources, Empresa Nacional de Hidrocarbonetos, FUNAE (Fund for Energy), and Petromoc. These partners define their needs and develop position descriptions. AHEAD places specialists with at least ten years of energy industry experience to serve for three months to two years as unpaid staff with the overseas partner agency. The organization especially targets senior or recently retired professionals, although anyone with over ten years of experience is eligible. AHEAD screens and orients eligible volunteers. Volunteers work under the direction of the partner agency. They report to a supervisor and may supervise other staff. The relationship is one of service and collegiality. AHEAD is currently interested in securing a reservoir engineer, a geologist/geophysicist, project managers, a GIS expert, a numerical modeling forecaster, a financial analyst, a company negotiator, and petroleum engineers in general.
