About Architects Without Borders

Architects Without Borders is a not-for-profit volunteer non-governmental civil service organization. AWB is structured as regionally based chapters operating under and through the North American (USA) national organization of Architects Without Borders. There are professional chapters and student chapters. Professional chapters are comprised of members who posess skills supporting the mission and objectives of AWB such as in architecture, planning, engineering and construction related fields as well as those relating to social sciences, education, public health and other community capacity and self reliance building professions. Student chapters are founded within Colleges and Universities to provide educational and volunteer opportunities for emerging professionals in alignment with the principles and objectives of AWB.

AWB affilliates with many other organizations such as Engineers Without Borders to reciprocally expand capacity and expand upon the interdisciplinary approach often necessary in certain humanitarian action situations.

AWB also provides placement of of its members within other organizations and relief operations so as to provide technical assistance and capacity building in response to specific program and project requirements.

International Voluntary Service Activities

AWB is currently involved in several programs and projects in response to the recent earthquake and tsunami in South Asia . We are active in several initiatives and have re-construction projects underway in Indonesia and Sri Lanka .

We are also currently active in Africa in housing, school and clinic construction projects.

AWB provides pro-bono services within the US to qualified communities and families as well and has several projects and programs that are ongoing.

Volunteers are either laypersons, students or professionals with skills and knowlege in applicable fields relevant to the initiatives, programs and projects that AWB or its affilliate organizations are engaged in. Volunteers also provide administrative and support services that support and advance the objectives of the organization. Volunteers are expected to understand and adhere to the standards of conduct adopted by the organization and be responsible to fulfill commitments made in the course of their volunteer activities.
