About Center to Bridge the Digital Divide
The Washington State University Center to Bridge the Digital
Divide (CBDD) recognizes Information Communication Technologies
as powerful tools enabling communities, institutions and ordinary
people to pursue desired futures not otherwise available to them.
Simply providing access to technology, however, is not enough.
CBDD is focused on empowering people with the ability to apply
technology with imagination and in ways that build community and
create opportunity. The CBDD facilitates collaborative partnerships,
provides educational outreach, research and policy guidance resulting
in expanded access to necessary telecommunications infrastructure
and critical information technologies among undeserved populations.
International Voluntary Service Activities
As the Third Party administrator of a USAID funded NetTel Africa
program, the CBDD identifies and facilitates travel to Africa
by volunteer regulators and university faculty with skills and
experience in the areas of Telecommunications policy and regulation.
Under a separate project NetTOM Malawi, the CBDD identifies and
facilitates travel of volunteers from government and universities
to support transportation planing and operations. Over the past
12 months approximately 25 US volunteers have been connected personally
with African partners. Many more have been connected via the Internet.
