About Dalit Freedom Network
The Dalit Freedom Network is individuals working together to empower Dalits in the quest for social, economic, and spiritual freedom. Dalits are considered the outcasts of Indian society, yet comprise nearly 1/3 of the total population of India (250-300 million people, which exceeds the population of the US). Dalits are denied access to public wells, public parks, basic medical services, and education. 70% live below the poverty line. Only 10% of Dalit women can read and write.
This oppression is due to the Hindu caste system. The Dalits believe that rejecting this system, turning to an ideology of spiritual freedom, and getting an education are the keys to finding liberation. The Dalit Freedom Network's four-fold model (Education, Medical Support, Economic Development, and Human Rights Advocacy) has been chosen as the best means to partner with the Dalits in their quest for social, economic, and spiritual freedom.
