Visions in Action is an international nonprofit organization based in Washington, DC founded in 1989 by director Shaun Skelton. The organization is dedicated to achieving social and economic justice in the developing world and offers six-month and 12-month programs in Africa and Mexico as well as short-term summer programs in Tanzania and Mexico. Volunteers are placed with nonprofit development organizations, research institutes and media organizations. They experience not only working in developing countries but are also exposed to different cultures and values.
Volunteers work in fields based on experience and interest as well as the needs of the organizations. Placements are available with human rights, law, health, journalism and education organizations to name a few. Visions in Action send around forty volunteers per year to Uganda, Tanzania, South Africa and Mexico. Visions in Action expects the number of volunteers to double in the next year due to an increased interest in volunteer service.

| Volunteer Profile Summary | |
Visions volunteers support grassroots development efforts and adopt a standard of living similar to the community in which they serve. Volunteers give of themselves and make sacrifices for the betterment of others, expecting nothing in return. They live and work as a community supporting one another during the experience. Volunteers have a college degree or equivalent work experience. They are self-sufficient individuals with cultural and/or overseas experience. All volunteers demonstrate a commitment to international development. |
