About Winrock International

Winrock International is a nonprofit organization that works with people in the United States and around the world to increase economic opportunity, sustain natural resources, and protect the environment. We are a leader in providing technical and management services for projects that improve the lives of the poor and disadvantaged and foster responsible management of natural resources. Winrock's goal is to provide lasting solutions to problems based on good science and sound economics. Our activities are backed by the best information and analysis available from research institutions and centers of learning worldwide. We're proud to continue the Rockefeller family's philanthropic tradition that over the decades has improved the lives of countless people worldwide.

International Voluntary Service Activities

Winrock's Volunteer Technical Assistance unit fields more than 450 volunteers each year to assist farmers, agribusinesses, and local nonprofit organizations worldwide. Skilled U.S. volunteers provide expertise in a wide variety of areas, including agricultural sciences, farming, and agribusiness; enterprise development, marketing, international trade, food processing, credit and financing, training, organizational development, and renewable energy.

More than 2,800 volunteers make up our growing number of prospective volunteers that share with us in our mission. They complete 2 to 6 week technical assignments. Our program currently operates in 31 countries in Asia, Africa, and North and South America. Program funding from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and other partners covers volunteer travel expenses and makes the program possible.

Winrock matches innovative approaches in agriculture, natural resource management, clean energy, and leadership development with the unique needs of its partners. By linking local individuals and communities with new ideas and technology, Winrock is increasing long-term productivity, equity, and responsible resource management to benefit the poor and disadvantaged of the world. Volunteers find these assignments to be personally and professionally rewarding, helping people help themselves is a contribution that makes sense.

Volunteer Profile Summary

Winrock volunteers are ordinary people who share their experience and skills to bring concrete benefits and goodwill around the globe. Volunteers are mid-career skilled professionals that provide expertise in a wide variety of areas, including agricultural sciences, farming, and agribusiness; enterprise development, marketing, international trade, food processing, credit and financing, training, organizational development, and renewable energy. These volunteers work with diverse groups, from credit unions in Kazakhstan and onion farmers in Nicaragua to beekeepers in India. Winrock volunteers make changes that improve peoples' lives, local economies, and the environment. There is no typical Winrock volunteer, they come from a broad area of professional backgrounds and have a vast set of skills, but they have one thing in common - they all bring home a greater understanding of the conditions under which people around the world live and work. While our volunteers may be ordinary people, they do extraordinary work.
